Refiner's Fire

"He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."

[Malachi 3:3]

FROM OUR ADOPTION AGENCY:

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study, and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.

That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver.

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says: "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver." She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?" He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it."

WOW! And incredibly humbling and challenging reminder of "why" waiting is required. And such a beautiful metaphor of the love of our God on us in the midst of the fire.

Love & Fear & Waiting

Recently, our case manager sent us this email that beautifully describes the adoption process. We are there!

When you distill all the feelings associated with international adoption, it probably comes down to two basic emotions – love and fear. Love for children you have never seen, thousands of miles away, is something that cannot be explained. Fear that it is never going to happen is probably easier to explain. A sense of helplessness, being totally out of control, is common and manifests itself in a myriad of ways.

[from another adoptive mommy's blog]
"Waiting on God isn't to be viewed as an obstruction in they way of the plan. Waiting is an essential part of the plan. For the child of God, waiting isn't simply about what I'll receive at the end of my wait. No, waiting is much more purposeful, efficient, and practical than that. Waiting is fundamentally about what I'll become as I wait. God is using the wait to do in and through me exactly what He's promised. Through the wait He's changing me. By means of the wait He's altering the fabric of my thoughts and desires. Through the wait He's causing me to see and experience new things about Him and His kingdom. And all of this sharpens me, enabling me to be a more useful tool in His redemptive hands."

Gotchya Day!

I cannot hardly wait for this day - Gotchya Day. This is the infamous, highly anticipated day in adoptive families when you finally get your child(ren). It's the day when you forever say, "I gotchya!" My new fellow adoptive mommy, Jill, sent me this link. Immediately, tears! Grab a tissue and enjoy the next 10 minutes of your life.

There were 2 aspects that prompted my tears, besides the fact that I miss my babies so much.

  1. The solo tear of this momma when she kissed her baby girl for the first time. That single tear has so much hope, dreams, hard work, prayers, fears, and anticipation within it. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to contain it all into 1 tear. I predict a waterfall in my first kiss.
  2. The kisses of the orphanage caregivers was overwhelming. These women [in orphanages all over the world] that care for orphans before they are placed in their forever families are amazing! They care for countless orphans - pour their love on them - and then send them into new families. That is tremendously humbling, sacrificial, and loving acts of service they give. God bless these women!

I hope you enjoy. And as you watch, would you pray for our little ones to join Brian & I in their forever family sooner than later?
